Module Three:
Yoga for Pregnancy Apprenticeship Training
Module 3 is an experiential approach to learning in a real “hands-on” teaching situation over a period of time. It is compulsory for those students who are working towards becoming Active Birth Centre Associates, having successfully completed Modules 1 and 2. It is a condition of going on into this more advanced phase of training that you attend a weekly yoga class with your own teacher, and are practising at home regularly.
This form of teacher training apprenticeship is designed to consolidate your knowledge and understanding of our approach to teaching yoga for pregnancy and birth. We aim to individualise this phase of training but it is likely to take most students 6-12 months to complete. The time it takes will depend on your previous experience and on how long it takes you to acquire the range of skills and knowledge you will need to teach your own classes.
• Observing 24 yoga for pregnancy classes with three senior teachers including the course tutors*
• Learning how to assist and adjust by giving hands-on help
• Developing your teaching skills with our ongoing support and supervision
• Learning more about the benefits and contra-indictions of the yoga postures
• Having time to discuss each class with the teacher afterwards, and ask questions
• Continuing to increase your knowledge of pregnancy and birth related matters prompted by the questions and issues that are raised by the women in the class
• Written assignments:
Monthly submission of a yoga practice journal
One researched essay
Three class plans
A case study
• A final study day on the practical aspects of setting up your own classes

* This requirement involves 48 hours of class attendance plus tutorial time after each class. Individual arrangements can be made for long distance students to attend classes intensively rather than on a weekly basis.
This module is an important precursor to embarking on your own teaching and will demand a lot of both us and you. Having regular direct access to our experience and expertise will provide you with a reliable basis for your own teaching and also a safe place to experiment under supervision. As you progress there will be opportunities for teaching practice and feedback, ongoing advice and further information. In the process, we expect you to do some more detailed study of some of the issues that are so much part and parcel of an Active Birth Yoga class.
The fee for this phase of training is £795, payable by cheque. This reflects the 48 hours you will spend on class observation and teaching practice, as well as the time we spend working with you outside the class, the time spent on reading and marking your written assignments, and assessing your progress. The fee also covers PI insurance and other administration costs. Arrangements can be made for payment of the fee for this module to be made by instalments.
