Yoga for Pregnancy

Practising gentle yoga in pregnancy will enhance your health, increase your self confidence and sense of well being. While deeply relaxing, these classes also prepare you for labour, birth and motherhood in the best and most effective way.

Yoga for pregnancy was pioneered by Janet Balaskas and was first taught at the Active Birth Centre in 1986. We are the only centre in the UK completely dedicated to teaching yoga to pregnant and postnatal women and we are also renowned as a centre of excellence for training pregnancy yoga teachers.

The team of teachers who work at the Centre are experienced specialists in this field and are also experts in all aspects of pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond. They have a wonderful way of weaving this knowledge into their classes that you will not find in most other pregnancy yoga classes. You will be in completely safe hands, in classes that are not overcrowded, where your teacher will be aware of your particular needs and will guide you to work at a level that is right for you.

FAQ What is the difference between 'Active Birth with Yoga'
and 'Yoga for Pregnancy' classes?

Everything we teach is designed to help you to have a more relaxed pregnancy and an easier calmer birth. In all classes you will learn breathing, relaxation, yoga stretches and labour and birth positions. You can start either class anytime after your 13th week of pregnancy.

Active Birth with Yoga classes are taught by Janet Balaskas who is the pioneer of Pregnancy Yoga and founder Active Birth. They and include yoga, visualisation and affirmation techniques specifically designed by Janet to deepen your understanding of Active Birth. (They are also compatible with HypnoBirthing.)

Pregnancy yoga classes are taught by Lynn Murphy and Alice Charlwood, teachers who originally trained with Janet and are senior teachers with many years of successful teaching experience. Their classes include preparation for active birth, stretching and relaxation for pregnancy.

We recommend that you attend these classes on an ongoing weekly basis throughout your pregnancy from whenever you start in addition to any of our courses or workshops. This will give you the possibility to deepen your practise of the techniques you will learn.
